Exposure to metals such as lead, arsenic, and mercury during pregnancy may be associated with changes in neuropsychomotor development in early childhood. In an article published in the journal Environments, researchers from Projeto Inf\u00e2ncia e Poluentes Ambientais, PIPA\/UFRJ, investigated the relationship between prenatal exposure to these metals and the development of children aged 12 to 18 months.<\/p>

O trabalho, intitulado \u201cPrenatal Metal Exposure and Neurodevelopmental Changes in Children up to 18 Months of Age: PIPA Cohort Project, Rio de Janeiro\u201d, acompanhou crian\u00e7as da coorte de nascimentos do PIPA a partir da an\u00e1lise de amostras de sangue do cord\u00e3o umbilical coletadas no parto das gestantes volunt\u00e1rias. O desenvolvimento infantil foi avaliado utilizando o Denver Developmental Screening Test II (Denver II), um teste de triagem que verifica a adequa\u00e7\u00e3o do neurodesenvolvimento para a idade da crian\u00e7a a partir da execu\u00e7\u00e3o de tarefas em quatro dom\u00ednios: pessoal-social, linguagem, motricidade fina e motricidade grossa. Os resultados indicaram que a exposi\u00e7\u00e3o pr\u00e9-natal ao ars\u00eanio esteve associada ao pior desempenho no dom\u00ednio motor grosso.<\/p>

The research reinforces the importance of monitoring environmental exposure during pregnancy, highlighting the role of contaminants as risk factors for changes in child development even in the first years of life.<\/p>
