Was this study reviewed by an ethics committee?

This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of Maternidade Escola da UFRJ. The Research Ethics Committee is a group of people who meet to uphold the interests of research participants in their integrity and dignity. It is responsible for evaluating and monitoring the ethical aspects of research involving human subjects. At the end of the study, all materials will be kept on file for at least 5 years, in accordance with Resolution 466/2012 and the guidelines of CEP ME-UFRJ.

Who pays for the treatment and exams that my child and I will receive?

Your treatment and your child's treatment in this study will be provided at the public institutions to which you have access, especially health clinics and Maternidade Escola da UFRJ. Other public or philanthropic institutions may perform examinations related to this research, but none of these institutions can offer treatment that is not part of the routine care of your treatment during prenatal, neonatal, and pediatric care.

What happens to the samples collected from me and my child?

Blood samples and other tissues that will be collected for studies will be stored in the Laboratory or Biorepository of the UFRJ Maternity School or in another laboratory affiliated with the Maternity School. If in the future there is a need to measure other substances in these serum/plasma samples or to conduct new studies, you are giving your consent.

What happens to the information collected (mine and my child's)?

What are the risks of this study?

The discomforts that may occur are those related to a normal blood draw for examination, such as pain and the formation of a bruise at the site; however, as we said previously, most likely the samples we need for the study will be collected together with the routinely collected tests that would have to be done to monitor the pregnancy.

This study does not involve any risks or discomforts beyond those described above, nor any change to the treatment provided or administration of experimental medications.

The procedures adopted in this research comply with the Ethics Criteria for Research with Human Subjects under Resolution No. 466/2012 of the National Health Council. None of the procedures used poses risks to your dignity or that of your child.

What are the benefits of this study?

Can I change my mind?

You may withdraw your and your child's participation in the research at any time. Your decision will not affect your regular care or that of your child, nor will it affect your receipt of all the care you should be receiving.

Am I required to participate?

Your participation (and that of your child) is voluntary, meaning it is not mandatory and you have full autonomy to decide whether or not you want to participate, as well as to withdraw your participation at any time. You or your baby will not be harmed in any way if you decide not to consent to your participation, or to withdraw from it. However, it is very important for the execution of this research.

And my child's participation?

What will my participation be like?

What is the objective of the research?

Investigate the individual and combined effects of exposure to environmental chemical pollutants, as well as the interactions between the sociocultural environment, genetic patterns, and environmental exposures, on children's development and health.

Why is this research being conducted?

At the Maternidade Escola da UFRJ we are conducting research that seeks to better understand the effects of environmental chemical pollutants on pregnant women and their babies (before birth and after birth, up to six months of age), and we would like to invite you and your child to participate voluntarily.
