Pyrethroids, insecticides commonly used in Brazil, have been associated with harmful health effects, such as neurodevelopmental delays, behavioral problems, and endocrine disorders, if used during pregnancy and early childhood. In an article published in "Frontiers in Public Health," researchers from the Childhood and Environmental Pollutants Project (PIPA/UFRJ) investigated the exposure of pregnant women and their children to these compounds, measuring the levels of pyrethroid metabolites in urine samples collected by the cohort.

The study, titled “Exposure to Pyrethroids in Pregnant Women and Children in Rio de Janeiro: Public Health Implications,” quantifies the presence of pyrethroid metabolites in urine samples from 142 pregnant women and their children, from birth to six months of age. The methodology employed involved biochemical analyses that allowed for a precise assessment of exposure to these compounds.

The results obtained revealed significant levels of pyrethroid metabolites in both pregnant women and children, indicating constant exposure to these insecticides. The research highlights the importance of understanding the routes of exposure, including transmission through the placenta and breast milk, as well as contact with environments treated with these substances.
