PIPA in the media: research featured in O Globo newspaper
A report in the newspaper O Globo highlighted a study by the Childhood and Environmental Pollutants Project (PIPA/UFRJ), which identified organochlorine pesticides (OCP), such as DDT, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) in maternal blood, umbilical cord, and breast milk samples.
The study, published in International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, analyzed samples from 135 women and their newborns, highlighting the persistence and bioaccumulation of these contaminants, although no significant relationship with health problems was observed in the studied population. The research reinforces the importance of monitoring these pollutants in protecting public health.
The research also indicated that factors such as age, ethnicity, and pre-gestational body mass index may influence exposure to these compounds, recommending future investigations to deepen these relationships and encourage actions that reduce population exposure to these pollutants.
